THE BEGINNING:
The story of the winery begins in 1999 when Grand Ole Opry star, Stu Phillips, makes a decision to open a winery in the Nashville, TN area. Inspired by a childhood memory of a monastery in Montreal, Quebec, Canada where Monks made wine, bread, and cheese, Stu Phillips brings a childhood memory back to life in later years with the founding of Long Hollow Winery in Goodlettsville, TN in 2000.
THE NEXT CHAPTER:
The next chapter begins in 2002 when Stu's son, Joel Phillips, receives a call from his father (Stu) that he needs a little help! The vintner Stu had hired two years before had just called Stu and said he would not be returning to work. With 2.5 tons of Niagara grapes at the back dock, there was an urgency to get these grapes pressed and fermenting. Stu asks Joel, "do you think you can come help me and make the wine?". Joel being a "do it yourselfer" says "sure" without pause. With a chemistry degree in his background and a "how to make wine" book in the other, Joel begins a new side career as the new vintner for Long Hollow Winery.
ROMANCE BLOSSOMS AT LONG HOLLOW WINERY:
Fast forward 8 years when Joel's future wife, Benita, enters Long Hollow Winery for a wine tasting with her sister, Brenda, and daughter Kayla. There at the winery Benita meets Aldona, Joel's mother, and talk begins. It turns out that Joel and Benita went to elementary, middle, and high school together but never actually met during their entire time in school. A long story made short, Aldona tells Benita that Joel is single, and Aldona tells Joel about meeting Benita, a very wonderful and single lady! I think you're starting to get the picture here. Joel and Benita make contact to have lunch on March 8, 2010 to discuss a wine tasting event for Benita's business customers. They have lunch, then schedule another lunch, and another! Things were going so well, Joel and Benita got married at Long Hollow Winery on November 25, 2012.
NEW OWNERSHIP:
On May 13, 2013, Joel and Benita purchased Long Hollow Winery from Joel's parents and are still the owners at this time. Plans are in the works for an outdoor Pavilion and event center for entertainment with wine, music, and dance! Stay tuned!
